alpinestars air carbon gloves

This month for gloves we look towards Alpinstars - moto-cross and auto racing safety gear manufacturer.

The gloves we will be reviewing this month are the SMX 2 air carbon model.

style

There is no questioning the stylish look of the air carbon gloves. Available in either black or gray, or vibrant blue, red, and orange - the moto-cross inspired design will make any hairy palm look angelic.

features

Styling aside, these gloves have the word 'air' in their name for a reason and that is because they do an excellent job of ensuring airflow throughout the glove. Again, taking a page from moto-cross gear, where airflow is of particular importance, the air carbon's deliver a cool breeze of air via mesh on the top and fingers as well as through ventilated forchettes. Their coolness factor (figuratively and literally!) makes them ideal for street bikes where limited airflow sometime causes excessive heat to build up within gloves and other gear.

safety

These gloves are also made for safety. This is apparent when looking at the carbon fiber knuckle protection, the reinforced leather palms, as well as the reinforced leather finger tips.

quality

Some riders have complained that the rubber grip on the fingers wear off after several dozen rides. There have also been reports stating the Velcro wrist strap looses it's ability to stick together. The stitching quality is more reassuring with an excellent job noted.

show me the money

Weighing in at a manufacturers suggested retail value of USD $59.00 these gloves are perfect if you are on a budget or want an extra pair of gloves specifically for hot weather riding.

overall value

The stylish design, ability to keep your hands and wrists cool, and a reasonable price all make this glove worth checking out if you want a cool summer glove. There have been some concerns expressed with the finger grips and Velcro straps - which suggest that extended wear may take a negative toll on these gloves faster than a pair specifically designed for durability. If your a city street rider or ride in hot temperatures frequently - this glove will suit your needs.
