Raincoat Water Repellent Review

By flood - Posted on 02 November 2008

If you have ever ridden in the rain before you know - it sucks ... unless you have the proper equipment. Being able to see clearly is one of the first things you notice that is diminished once water droplets start beading up on your motorcycle visor.

There are many anti-rain gels, foams, and other types of rain repellents, such as Rain-X that do a good job of clearing away rain, however, most of them are designed for glass surfaces (ie. car windshields) and not motorcycle visors, which are made out of polycarbonate.

It seems that the manufacturers of these products try to additionally market their products as rain repellent for motorcycle visors and windshields as well to increase their marketing pool.

The problem with this is that the chemical compounds have been known to 'eat away' or cause damage to the polycarbonate material of the visor. Introducing Rain[Coat].

Raincoat® Water Repellent is specifically designed for motorcycle visors. In fact, Raincoat® will not effectively work on glass windshields!

style

Since Raincoat®, once applied, is not visible to the naked eye - style does not apply for this review.

features

Repelling water away from your visor is the sole purpose of Raincoat® and that it does the job. This video made by MotoSolutions, the maker of Raincoat®, clearly demonstrates this fact:

safety

Being able to see without having to take your hands off the grips, such as a glove wiper, makes Raincoat® a safer option at clearing away water from your visor.

The chemical compound is safe to use on your polycarbonate visor / windshield and will not damage them opposed to some other anti-rain applications.

quality

Raincoat® is excellent at repelling water away from your helmet's visor, however, it does require frequent application. It is a great product for long trips where you will most likely encounter rain somewhere along your journey, but for everyday riding, such as commuting, the application may become tiresome.

show me the money

A box of five 2.5 gram packets will run approximately USD $6.

overall value

Raincoat® is amazing at repelling rain. In this regard the product receives an 11 out of 10. Once properly applied, even light rain falls right off the visor.

The product is relatively cheap.

The two complaints we have about Raincoat® is the packaging and streaking.

The Raincoat® gel comes in plastic packets opposed to a bottle or a tube. As such, once the packet is opened the entire contents must be used immediately before expiring. The reason for this is that the carrier in Raincoat® is combustible which results in shipping complications. The packets make Raincoat® fall into the lower-cost shipping guidelines.

Regarding the application of the gel, it must be rigorously buffed into the visor to eliminate streaks. If gently applied and rubbed on the visor surface, the buffing patterns can be seen in the light, causing an even greater distraction than the rain beads themselves!
